What Is a Soxhlet Extractor?
A soxhlet extractor is an experimental apparatus used to extract components dissolved in a solvent from a solid sample. The apparatus consists of three stages: a flask containing the solvent in the lower stage, a container for the sample in the middle stage, and a cooler in the upper stage.
The lower flask is heated to evaporate the solvent, which is cooled by the upper cooler to return to a liquid state and dripped onto the solid sample in the middle section, where the soluble components are gradually dissolved. Uses of Soxhlet Extractors

Principle of Soxhlet Extractors
Soxhlet extractors are laboratory apparatus consisting of three parts connected in order from the bottom to the top: a flask, a container for the sample, and a cooler. The lower flask is filled with solvent and heated by a heater to evaporate the solvent slowly. Cooling water circulates in the upper cooler, cooling the solvent that has evaporated from the lower flask and returning it from a gas to a liquid. The cooled solvent is dropped onto the solid sample in the middle section, and the soluble components are gradually dissolved from the solid sample. When a certain amount of solvent accumulates in the middle vessel, it is returned to the lower flask by the siphon principle and used again for evaporation. The target component dissolved from the solid does not evaporate because it has a higher boiling point than the solvent and accumulates in the lower flask. By repeating this process, the target substance can be efficiently extracted with a small amount of solvent.
The solvents used are mainly water and organic solvents, but a variety of solvents can be used depending on the purpose. On the other hand, there are some points to keep in mind, such as the solvent must have a boiling point that is low enough to evaporate when heated, and the solvent must be able to dissolve the target component properly.
