What Is an FRP Sheet?
A FRP sheet is thin, soft sheet of mixed plastic and fiber, and is often sold as UV-cured FRP sheets. The main materials used are vinyl ester resin and glass fiber, which are cured by ultraviolet light.
It can be easily cut with scissors or a cutter knife, and drilling, painting, and other processing is easy. There is almost no shrinkage, and stable strength can be obtained.
It is used as a protective sheet for outdoor use because of its excellent waterproofing, insulation, weather resistance, and corrosion resistance.
FRP sheet is especially used to protect buildings and ships near the sea, which are prone to salt damage.
Uses of FRP Sheets
In places where high safety is required, such as pedestrian and humanitarian bridges, FRP sheets are processed on the surface to increase the corrosion resistance of the metal of the base.
FRP sheets are also used for surfaces such as control panels, roofs, sluice gates, ships, swimming pools, and cars because of their waterproof, insulating, and heat-resistant properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.
FRP sheets can be affixed to metal, wood, concrete, and plastic.
Principle of FRP Sheets
FRP sheets are mainly a mixture of vinyl ester resin called epoxy acrylate, which hardens under ultraviolet light, and glass fiber.
The FRP sheets are attached to the substrate to prevent air accumulation. The substrate is removed so that it is free of dust, dirt, and other foreign matter and oil.
Exposure to UV light hardens the UV-cured resin inside and fixes it to the shape of the substrate. Curing time of the resin with UV light is about 20 minutes, and about 35 minutes or more with sunlight. The amount of UV rays varies depending on the season, and when it is cloudy, poor curing may occur, so it is better to conduct a preliminary test.
Remove the protective film after pasting. Since it hardens with ultraviolet rays, it is necessary to protect the film with a vinyl sheet or the like during installation so that sunlight does not hit the film. Use UV protective glasses when using UV light.
FRP sheets contain styrene, which may cause odor problems.
