What Is a Rotary Position/Angle Sensor?
Angle sensors are sensors for detecting angles from the position of objects. Recently, there is an increasing need for high-precision position detection in precision processing, semiconductor manufacturing, automobiles, and robotics, and the need to measure precise angles for position detection is also increasing. Angle sensors are mainly available in the following types: optical, magnetic, inductive, and potentiometer. Each method should be selected for use according to the application.
Applications for Angle Sensors
Angle sensors are currently used in a variety of applications, including precision processing, semiconductor manufacturing, automobiles, and robotics.
- Automobiles
By detecting the crank angle and cam angle with an angle sensor, the optimum timing and time for fuel injection are calculated. Other applications include electric power steering and electronically controlled suspension. - Robots
It is used, for example, to detect and control the position of a robot arm.
Principle of Angle Sensors
There are four main methods of angle sensor principle:
- Optical
Light from a light-emitting element such as an LED passes through a disk with a slit-like grid and is detected by a light-receiving element. The angle is detected from the number of light pulses detected. This method is called the transmission type, and another method is the reflection type. In the reflective type, the angle is measured by the light pulses that bounce from the light-emitting element to the disc and are received by the light-receiving element. - Magnetic
When a current flows through a Hall element, the angle is detected by measuring the voltage generated when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to it. This phenomenon is called the Hall effect. - Inductive
It consists of a primary coil, a secondary coil, and a cam-shaped core that rotates between them. When voltage is applied to the primary coil, the secondary coil outputs a voltage depending on the position of the core, and the angle is detected from the magnitude of this voltage. - Potentiometer
The potentiometer has terminals, and the brush rotates on the resistive element. The angle of rotation of the brush is measured by measuring the resistance between the terminals.
What Is the Magnetic Type of Angle Sensor?
Magnetic angle sensors convert changes in the magnetic field into electrical resistance and output the voltage as an analog output signal. Unlike potentiometer-type sensors, magnetic angle sensors may have two output systems. These two output values are generally different except for the neutral position. Having two output systems improves the detected value and the reliability of the angle sensor.
In addition, potentiometer-type angle centers always have a blind spot in the angle sensor due to their structure, so two angle sensors are required for 360° detection. However, a magnetic angle sensor can detect 360° with only one angle sensor, thus reducing the number of parts required.
Since magnetic angle sensors are non-contact, they have fewer failure factors and have a longer service life than potentiometer angle sensors and other contact-type sensors. However, in the unlikely event of a failure, care must be taken with the distance to the sensing element. If distance adjustment is not considered when reinstalling the sensor, premature failure of the angle sensor will occur if contact occurs. Also, if the distance from the detecting body is too far, the angle may not be detected correctly. When replacing a magnetic angle sensor, observe the operating distance published by the manufacturer.
Analog Output and Electrical Resistance Change
Since there are two output methods, one is voltage and the other is current, care should be taken when selecting the output method. The output range of analog output differs depending on the angle sensor. For voltage, the range is not only 0 to 5 V, but also 0 to 10 V. Check the manufacturer's specifications carefully.
Angle sensors require a power circuit and a ground circuit for analog output. Therefore, the angle sensor has three terminals, which are the power terminal, ground terminal, and analog output terminal, respectively. If the analog output is abnormal, the angle sensor itself may be faulty, but the wiring may also be abnormal. If the power and ground circuits are not configured correctly, the analog output will also be abnormal. Even if the analog output is 5 V, the power circuit may require an input of 5 V or more, such as 12 V or 24 V.
