About This Product

■Summary

In order to reduce the weight of the domestically produced H-IIB rocket, we introduced for the first time a new technology that uses frictional heat to soften metal and weld it. The technologies introduced are FSW (Friction Stir Welding) and FPW (Friction Plug Welding). FSW is a technology in which a protruding tool is pressed against the joint while rotating, and the joint is stirred and joined while being softened by heat generated by friction, and is used for joining the circumference and dome parts of rocket tanks. It has characteristics such as stable quality and faster joining, and is already being applied in many industries including railways and ships. However, in the final process of FSW joining, it is necessary to remove the rotating protrusion tool that is being pressed, leaving a hole. We use frictional heat to connect the plug to completely fill the hole and repair it. This technology is called FPW, and Nitto Seiki designed and manufactured this FPW equipment and delivered it to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.'s Tobishima Plant (Tobishima Village, Aichi Prefecture). In addition, the H-IIB rocket and H3 rocket are also planned to be used for launching commercial satellites in the future, and new technologies such as FSW and FPW, which soften and weld metal using frictional heat, will be used in Japan's future space development and aircraft. It is expected that this technology will make a major contribution to technological development in all fields, including industry.

■Process

①Initial process Set the materials on both sides, rotate one material, and advance the other material into contact. ②Frictional heat generation process Frictional heat is generated from the butt surfaces. Spindle rotation is suddenly stopped when the temperature suitable for welding is reached. ③Upset process Welding is completed by applying upset thrust for a certain period of time. At that time, curl-shaped burrs are generated.

・Solid phase bonding. ・A bonding strength equivalent to that of the base metal can be obtained. - Reproducible and stable quality. ・It is possible to join dissimilar metals together. ・Less thermal effects on areas other than the bonded surface. - Heavy cutting is not required by pressure welding with a small number of parts. ・High energy efficiency associated with bonding. ・It is harmless as it does not generate spatter or fumes. ・Working environment is good with minimal sparks and smoke. - Can be made hollow, contributing to weight reduction and environmental protection. - Machine operation is easy and does not require skill.
