A rigid-flex PCB is a type of printed circuit board, also known as a rigid FPC PCB.
A printed circuit board is an insulator board with wiring only on its surface or inside. It is a basic component of electronic circuit production by mounting electronic components on this board.
Printed circuit boards include rigid boards made of inflexible rigid materials and flexible boards made of thin flexible materials. Rigid-flexible PCBs are composite PCBs that integrate rigid and flexible PCBs. They are PCBs that combine the advantages of both rigid and flexible PCBs.
Rigid-flex PCBs are printed circuit boards that combine the advantages of rigid-flex PCBs, which have the strength and component mounting capacity of rigid PCBs, with the three-dimensional wiring capability of flexible PCBs.
Compared to the case where rigid and flexible substrates are made separately and used separately, rigid flexible substrates are lighter, smaller, and denser, and generate less noise. Therefore, they are used in equipment such as home game consoles, cell phones, medical equipment, smart devices, storage devices, wearable devices, and communication base stations, where smaller and lighter size and weight are required.
Rigid-flex PCBs are printed circuit boards that integrate a rigid substrate, which includes easy to mount components, and a flexible substrate, which can be bent to enable three-dimensional wiring.
The rigid part where components are mounted has a structure in which all layers of the flexible layer for three-dimensional wiring and the rigid layer for circuit formation are overlapped. The outer layer and inner layer are connected by through holes. The flexible part consists of only flexible layers, these layers are separated into units of one or two layers as the flexibility is impaired when the number of flexible layers increases.
In rigid-flex PCBs, the rigid-flex PCBs and flexible PCB are integrated into a single unit, so there is no need to connect the PCBs with connectors. Since the height and weight of the connectors can be preserved, the boards can be made smaller, lighter, and thinner, with the advantage of generating less noise.
Rigid flexible boards are available in a variety of shapes, such as folding, flying tail, and book binder types, and can be used in a variety of ways depending on the conditions of the installation location.
The disadvantage of a rigid-flex PCB is that the manufacturing process is complicated. This limits the number of manufacturers, and the manufacturing cost is high.
