A rectangle connector is a connector that is square, but it can be used for a wide range of applications.
The D-SUB terminal for transmitting video signals, DVI terminals, HDMI terminals, DisplayPort terminals, etc. are all rectangle connectors, although their shapes and sizes differ.
USB terminals used to connect PCs, smartphones, and other devices to transmit various signals and connect to peripheral devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most of them use rectangle connector.
The RJ-45 connector used for Ethernet signal transmission is also in the rectangle connector category, although it has a slightly special shape.
Rectangle connectors, D-SUB connectors used to be the mainstay for transmitting video signals, but they are now being replaced by HDMI and DisplayPort terminal connectors via DVI terminal connectors as signals become more digitalized.
The DVI terminal was the successor to the VGA standard and supported analog RGB, and was the only digital standard until HDMI was introduced, but currently manufacturers are not developing devices that support this standard.
The DisplayPort is a digital interface standard developed to replace DVI.
The USB connector is a type of rectangle connectors that is very popular for connecting PCs and smartphones to various drive units, USB memory devices, printers, and other peripheral devices.
Currently, HDMI connectors and USB connectors are representative products of rectangle connectors.
HDMI connectors are used to transmit digital video and control signals. For example, they are used to connect a TV to a DVD/BD/HDD recorder, or a TV to an AV amplifier.
When connecting a TV to a DVD/BD/HDD recorder, the recorder's video signal is basically used for playback on the TV, but HDMI also transmits control signals, as mentioned above.
This is called HDMI-CEC (consumer electronics control). This function allows, for example, the remote control of a TV to control a connected recorder simultaneously.
When the TV is turned on with the remote control, the recorder can be turned on and off at the same time, and vice versa. It is also possible to use the TV remote control to select and run the recorder's content.
The HDMI standard has been standardized by the relevant manufacturers' organizations, and its subset, the HDMI-CEC standard, has also been standardized, so the basic commands are the same regardless of manufacturer.
Therefore, basic control is supported even when connecting TVs and recorders from different manufacturers.
On the other hand, USB connectors are mainly used for transmitting digital data, whereas HDMI is mainly used for transmitting video signals.
Like HDMI, USB technology standards are also being standardized by related manufacturers.
USB 1.0 was first standardized in 1996, and since then, it has been evolving and improving, with USB4 being released in September 2019.
The maximum transmission speed of USB1.0 was 123 Mbps in half-duplex mode, but in USB4.0, the maximum transmission speed has increased to 40 Gbps in front-duplex mode.
