Surface grinders, as the name implies, are grinders that grind the flat surface of a workpiece and are the most commonly used in the machining shop.
Surface grinders can be classified into several categories according to the shape of the table on which the workpiece is set and the shape of the grinding wheel spindle on which the grinding wheel is set.
Depending on the shape of the table, they can be classified into two types: square table type and rotary table type.
The square table type can be further classified into three types according to the shape of the grinding wheel spindle.
There is the horizontal type, in which the wheel spindle is horizontal to the ground; the vertical type, in which the wheel spindle is perpendicular to the ground; and the gantry type, which has a sliding part to move the wheel spindle head horizontally.
There are many different types of surface grinders, each with its advantages and disadvantages, so selecting the appropriate one to grind is necessary.
A grinder presses a workpiece against a grinding wheel that rotates at high speed to cut the workpiece little by little.
The amount of work that can be ground is much smaller than that of milling, which is a flat-cutting process.
In a horizontal spindle surface grinder with a square table, a cut is made when the table moves back and forth from side to side, and the maximum cut is 0.01 to 0.2 mm during rough grinding and 0.01 mm during finish grinding.
However, grinding with a wheel can finish the machined surface satisfactorily.
Surface grinders are generally used for finishing workpieces, such as hardened steel, that have mainly flat geometries.
Comparing the horizontal square table type and the rotary table type, the flat square table type has a smaller contact area between the grinding wheel and the workpiece, so it can perform precision grinding, although its machining efficiency is lower.
The rotary table type has a larger contact area between the grinding wheel and the workpiece, resulting in higher grinding efficiency. Generally, a grinding wheel with low cohesion and large grain size is selected.
However, since the rotational speed varies depending on the grinding position, the finished surface is somewhat worse.
In the horizontal square table type, there are plunge cut grinding, traverse cut grinding, and bias grinding, depending on how the table is moved in relation to the grinding wheel axis.
The appropriate grinding method is selected according to the grinding range of the workpiece relative to the wheel width and the required surface finish.
Grinding conditions must be determined before grinding.
The three conditions are the wheel speed, workpiece feed rate, and depth of cut of the wheel spindle.
The peripheral speed determines the wheel speed. Usually, a surface grinder should be set to a speed that allows a peripheral rate of 1,200 to 1,800 m/min.
The feed rate of the workpiece is the feed rate of the table.
It varies depending on the material and hardness of the workpiece and the required surface roughness, but for finish grinding, it is generally set to 30,000 to 50,000 mm/min.
