A BNC receptacle is used in connection with BNC plug connectors attached to both ends of a coaxial cable.
A coaxial cable is a signal transmission cable that carries signals in the megahertz band. The outside of the signal line at the center of the cable is doubly insulated, and the outside is further protected by a vinyl or other covering.
BNC receptacles are mounted on the panel surface (exposed side) of a device or on a circuit board inside the device.
BNC receptacles provide a direct connection between the internal circuits of the equipment and the signals of the coaxial cable.
The connection using a combination of a BNC plug connector and a BNC receptacle is a commonly used connection method and is called the Bionet-Lock method. This allows for easy adjustment of coaxial cable routing, for example, even after connecting devices.
The BNC plug connector and receptacle can be connected relatively easily without using screws, simply by pressing and turning the internal spring to engage the BNC plug connector and receptacle, yet the connection is strong and can be easily removed.
BNC receptacles are often used in combination with BNC plug connectors in various measuring, communication, and video equipment.
Due to the characteristics of the connector, it is considered that the frequency of the signal used should be up to about 300 MHz, and is not suitable for the transmission of signals above this frequency.
The electrical characteristics and shape of BNC plug connectors, including BNC Receptacles, are specified by MIL (military standard: a technical standard issued by the US Department of Defense).
BNC plug connectors are often used to transmit signals over coaxial cables, but there are other connectors for similar purposes.
DIN connectors are used for broadcasting equipment, for example, because they can maintain transmission quality even in humid environments. F-type connectors are also used for coaxial cables for TV antenna cables, and N-type connectors are used for radio oscillators and other equipment because of their waterproof function.
