■Separation and quantification of soil carbon by multi-step heating

In recent years, the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) in solids has become increasingly important. Measuring TOC content is now an important indicator not only for waste evaluation but also for soil evaluation. Our soli TOC® cube adds residual oxidizing carbon (ROC, also known as elemental carbon) to total organic carbon (TOC) and total inorganic carbon (TIC), which cannot be distinguished from TOC using conventional equipment. Automatic separation and quantification of three types of carbon forms is possible. In addition to conventional TOC measurements using direct and indirect methods, the multi-step heating method enables the measurement of a new parameter called TOC400, which is distinguished from ROC. This new method does not require any pretreatment such as acid addition, which saves time and greatly improves laboratory operational efficiency.

■Outstanding detection limit of 10ppm

The soli TOC cube boasts unprecedented sensitivity as a solid-state TOC measurement device. The measurement range has a wide range of 0.001 to 100% as carbon element. Accurate multi-step heating is essential to reproducibly perform separate quantification of different carbon species using temperature dependence. This is achieved by the soli TOC cube's dynamic heater, which allows direct control of the temperature at the crucible (sample container) location. These features eliminate any thermal interference and contribute to stable combustion conditions. In addition, the catalytic action in the post-combustion tube enables complete oxidation and combustion of samples containing high concentrations of carbon, resulting in high measurement quality. Additionally, unclear peak separation between residual oxidizing carbon (ROC) and total inorganic carbon (TIC) can be overcome with carrier gas switching, a standard feature of the soli TOC cube.
