About This Product

■Danpen (Class B1 (porcelain), glazed)

Valuing an awareness of the utterly ordinary in daily life, cutting out one aspect of the familiar things around us and reconstructing them with those pieces, changing how we see things and elevating that into new art. The work of artist Mariko Tomita is expressed here in tile. We want to cherish the casual fragments of everyday life, even when they are not special. Without being swayed by feelings or preconceptions, so that no discovery is overlooked. The value of a thing changes with the gaze of the person looking at it. Whether or not you find it appealing is entirely up to you. That is exactly why we should not forget to look with bright, eager eyes, and so discover and notice the appeal of a thing. And then take it as a lesson.

■The Intangible Value Beyond the Finished Product

The value found in a fragment is letting the user experience a process they normally cannot take part in. For that reason, Danpen is presented starting from the original plaster model. In addition, each texture is given a name and a poem, compiled in a notebook like a memoir together with its surface finish and material. We want people to feel closer to tiles and enjoy them not only as a finished product but through the production process as well. Danpen was created with that thought in mind.
