What Solid Lubricant Coatings Are (Dry Film Lubricants)
■A paint-type lubricant that uses solid lubricants such as molybdenum disulfide, graphite and fluororesin.It is effective at reducing friction, improving wear resistance (protecting parts and preserving mechanisms) and preventing abnormal noise, and is used on the sliding parts of automobiles, cameras and office equipment. A broad product lineup is available to suit diverse friction conditions such as load, sliding speed and atmosphere.

What Solid Lubricants Are
■Solid lubricants (Solid Lubricants) are solids that possess "lubricity."The difference from liquid lubricants such as lubricating oil is that true contact between the friction surface materials is less likely to occur. Whereas fluid lubrication with lubricating oil tends to cause galling from oil film breakdown in high-load regions and at low speeds, a solid lubricant, when used appropriately, forms a solid lubricating film on the friction surfaces that suppresses direct contact between the friction surface materials, making galling unlikely.

Most solid lubricants deliver their lubricating effect because they either have a layered structure or, while not layered, have very low shear strength. Representative examples of the former include molybdenum disulfide, graphite and mica, while the latter include fluororesins such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and soft metals.

Representative Solid Lubricants
■Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2)It has a hexagonal crystal structure, and because the attraction between S and S is weak compared with the strong Mo-S bonds, good lubricity is thought to be delivered between those S layers.

■GraphiteA layered crystalline mineral said to deliver low-friction characteristics through shear from the weak bonding force between layers and through slippage between particles.
