Rare earth magnets are named because they contain rare earth elements such as samarium and neodymium, and there are two main types: samarium cobalt and neodymium.

■ Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium

Currently, it is an ultra-high performance magnet with the highest characteristics. Because of these high properties and the relatively abundant main raw materials neodymium and iron, its major feature is that it can be produced at a relatively low cost without any future resource problems like samarium cobalt. Additionally, its specific gravity is more than 10% lower than samarium cobalt, so it meets the need for smaller and lighter products. Furthermore, due to its high mechanical strength, it is less likely to chip or crack and is easy to machine and handle after magnetization.On the other hand, the temperature coefficient of residual magnetic flux density and coercive force is larger than that of samarium cobalt, so it can be used at different temperatures. Care must be taken at the design stage regarding the operating point. In addition, surface treatment is required for applications where it rusts easily due to poor corrosion resistance and is used in high temperature and humid environments. There are various methods for surface treatment depending on the purpose, shape, etc.
