An EV battery is a battery for electric vehicle (EV) applications.
The battery does not run out after one-time use, but can be recharged and used over and over again.
Currently, lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used EV battery. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter and have a higher capacity than the lead-acid batteries that preceded them, and have the advantage of high energy density.
For this reason, all-solid-state batteries, which do not use electrolyte, are currently being developed as the next generation of EV battery.
EV batteries are used as on-board batteries to power hybrid vehicles and EVs.
Recently, in addition to their use as power sources for EVs, EV batteries are also expected to be used as virtual power plants while mounted on EVs in order to ensure a stable supply of electric power.
Since it is difficult to stockpile large amounts of electricity, there is always the risk of sudden power outages due to power shortages. When there is a power shortage, in addition to the power from the actual power plant, the concept of a virtual power plant that accommodates power from solar power generation, storage batteries, and EVs in companies and general households.
This section describes the operating principles of lithium-ion batteries, which are currently the mainstream EV batteries, and all-solid-state batteries, which are currently in the development stage.
Lithium-ion batteries are charged and discharged by lithium ions moving back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes in a liquid electrolyte.
A lithium-ion battery consists of an organic solvent containing a lithium compound, a cathode of oxide containing lithium and metal, an anode of graphite, and a separator made of a polymer compound membrane.
When an external charger supplies an electric current and sends electrons to the anode, positive lithium ions move from the cathode side through the gap in the separator to the anode, creating a potential difference between the cathode and anode and charging the battery.
When discharging, the lithium ions stored in the negative electrode move to the positive electrode, and electrons flow from the negatively charged negative electrode to the external load to use the energy in the battery.
All-solid-state batteries work on the same principle as lithium-ion batteries, in which lithium ions move back and forth between the positive and negative electrodes. However, all solid-state batteries do not use an electrolyte, and lithium ions move through the solid electrolyte. Also, since there is no risk of the cathode and anode touching, there is no separator.
EV batteries are mainly rechargeable batteries. The EV batteries currently being developed and commercialized include the following:
Lead-acid batteries are superior in that materials are abundant and inexpensive, and the risk of explosion or fire due to external forces applied during a collision is low.
They are used as auxiliary batteries for electric vehicles. By securing a separate battery for the air conditioner and lights, the parts powered by the auxiliary battery can operate without problems even if the drive battery fails in the event of an accident. Lead-acid batteries are widely used because of their high service life and low cost.
One of the main characteristics of lithium-ion batteries is that their energy density is 1.5~5 times higher than that of other rechargeable batteries. It has the advantages of no memory effect, which appears to reduce capacity, and a high nominal voltage of 3.6 V. On the other hand, its high energy density is also advantageous at high temperatures.
On the other hand, the high energy density also poses a risk of ignition at high temperatures. For this reason, electric vehicles using drive batteries must be protected from damage caused by large shocks. Automobile manufacturers pay special attention to the safety of drive batteries in their development.
The nickel-metal hydride battery consists of nickel hydroxide for the positive electrode and a hydrogen storage alloy for the negative electrode.
Although nickel-metal hydride batteries are inferior to lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density and other performance aspects, they are superior in terms of cost and safety. They are mainly used for HEVs (hybrid vehicles) due to their low energy density.
