Cysteamine is an aminothiol with the chemical formula HSCH2CH2NH2 and is a degradation product of cysteine, also known as 2-aminoethanethiol.
The hydrochloride salt has a white to light brown crystalline appearance and can be altered by light.
Known methods for producing Cysteamine include hydrolyzing 2-(2-aminoethylthio)thiazoline dihydrochloride, which is obtained by reacting chloroethylamine hydrochloride and mercaptothiazoline, with hydrochloric acid.
Cysteamine is classified as acutely toxic in the GHS classification.
Uses of Cysteamine
Uses of cysteamine include pharmaceuticals and radiation therapy.
In pharmaceuticals, it is known as a treatment for cystinosis, because cysteamine can act on the disulfide bonds in cystine, cleaving them.
In radiotherapeutic applications, cysteamine acts as a so-called radical scavenger, contributing to the removal of radicals produced by the indirect action of radiation.
