Fluorescein sodium, also known as uranine, is a dark brown or orange powder, odorless and soluble in water, and ethanol, but almost insoluble in diethyl ether. It exhibits a bright yellow color in acidic conditions and fluoresces in strongly acidic or alkaline conditions.
