A compression spring (compression coil spring) is used to relieve shock, or weight in the direction of a load, by utilizing the reaction force of a compressed spring.
It is the most common type of spring and widely known for its cylindrical shape in terms of shape and usage. Various shapes of compression spring exist depending on the application, usage, and location.
For example, a compression spring is the spring at the end of a ballpoint pen, which uses the reaction force of a compression spring to return the tip of the ballpoint pen.
There are mainly two types of compression springs, "equal pitch coil springs" and "unequal pitch coil springs," and they are used according to the load applied, and the required function.
The entire spring has the shape of a perfect cylinder. The relationship between load and deflection applied to a spring is generally linear.
Since the relationship between load and deflection is linear, it is easy to design a graph by expressing the relationship between the two in a mathematical equation. However, it should be noted that actual springs tend to deviate from the calculated values in the regions below 30% and above 70% of the total deflection.
This is due to the fact that when a spring is compressed, the adhesion actually starts at both ends and the effective number of turns changes little by little.
Equal pitch coil springs have a cylindrical shape and are used in gas regulating valves, automobile suspensions, clutches for motorcycles, knock-off ballpoint pens, spring beds, key locks for suitcases, automobile suspensions and computer keyboards.
The entire spring is not a perfect cylinder shape, but there are various shapes. Basically, the relationship between the load applied to the spring, and the deflection is non-linear.
Unequal pitch coil springs have a conical or barrel shape, and are used for contact springs in battery cases (negative side), foot switches, cock valves, space-saving springs, coffee filter handles, etc.
They are also used in a wide range of fields, from household products to industrial products, such as dampers for car suspensions and bridges to mitigate vibration.
In addition to "equal pitch coil springs" and "unequal pitch coil springs," there are compression coil springs of various shapes, and since they can have various features depending on the number of coils and the winding method, special compression coil springs are often manufactured for each application.
In addition, the winding direction of coil springs is generally "right-hand winding" if there is no specific instruction.
When selecting a compression coil spring, it is necessary to consider the spring's various properties. For compression coil springs, the spring constant, free length, and outside diameter are important.
In addition, the range in which a compression coil spring can be used is from the position of free length (length with no load applied to both ends) to the maximum allowable compression length (the minimum length in which both ends can be pressed together to make the minimum dimension). In addition, compression coil springs need to be fixed at both ends to target parts (compression coil spring washers, etc.) when they are installed in equipment, and selection should be made in accordance with the shapes of these parts, etc.
Compression coil springs are generally used under static load. Static load refers to the condition in which the spring is used with almost no load fluctuation, or in which the spring is used in an environment in which repeated load fluctuations, if any, are less than about 1,000 times.
When used under such static load, there is no problem if the allowable stress of the spring is within the elastic limit of the material.
The relationship of allowable torsional stress to wire diameter is specified for each material, and it is recommended that compression coil springs be used in an environment where the maximum stress at the time of spring use is less than 80% of the allowable torsional stress specified.
