This section provides an overview for end mills as well as their applications and principles. Also, please take a look at the list of 12 end mill manufacturers and their company rankings.

An end mill, also called a raised tap, is a tap that has no cutting edges and can process threads with little or no chips.
The strength of the processed thread is high, and variations in effective diameter can be controlled.
It is suitable for relatively soft work materials, and can be used for both stops and through holes.
Some types are equipped with a groove to improve the supply of cutting fluid.
Uses of end mills are mainly selected for soft materials such as aluminum. End mills are also available for steel, but they are not suitable for hard materials. Since high torque is required during processing, the end mills are not a tool to be used by hand, but with a highly specialized tap.
Since very few chips are produced, it is especially effective for machining stop holes, where chips often cause problems.
End mills for steel are available from various manufacturers for machining iron, low carbon steel, low carbon alloy steel, and stainless steel.
Since end mills are processing method for forming threads by plastic forming, the size of the pre-hole has a great influence on the thread shape. Therefore, high-precision control of the pre-hole is necessary.
When machining a M10 x 1.5 thread with a spiral tap or point tap, the normal preparation hole size is Φ8.5, but with an end mill, the preparation hole size is around Φ9.2 (according to the manufacturer's recommendation).
The key to machining a high-precision pre-hole is to use a carbide drill (with burnishing edge, etc.) that is more precise than a conventional HSS drill.
For small-diameter holes where hole dimensional control is strict, we recommend the application of high-precision drills with drill diameter dimensions in the centigrade range.
Furthermore, when finishing up to stable high-precision hole drilling, contouring or boring with end mills are effective after pre-drilling with a drill.
End mills cannot be used for both through-hole and stop-hole drilling, as they exist separately.
Due to the high torque required for machining, the thread depth will be unstable unless rigid tapping is performed instead of using a tapper collet.
