An earth clamp is a "clamp used for connection" to use the earth as part of an electrical circuit. It refers to a metal fitting that can be easily installed and removed.
There are several types of earth clamp, the most common of which is the earth clamp used on welding machines. The overall shape of this type resembles a small vise (clip-types and magnetic types also exist), and it can be securely and easily attached by tightening a screw.
Since welders change the earth point many times during welding, an earth clamp that can be easily attached and detached is a must-have item.
Other types of earth clamp include those that can simultaneously secure and ground shielded cables and signal wires. The earth clamp is used to connect (ground) and secure suspension wires and bond wires electrically.
There are two types of uses for earth clamps.
One is when the grounding location needs to be changed repeatedly, and the other is when the clamp is used to connect and secure the grounding simultaneously.
In the former case, as explained in the overview, grounding for welding machines is a good example.
By attaching an earth clamps in advance not only onto welding machines but also to large generators and electric compressors that need to be used in different locations, the connection of earth can be done with a single touch.
An example of using an earth clamps to connect and secure grounding simultaneously, is when wiring shielded wires indoors. The shield of the shielded wire (common conductive layer: copper tape, etc.) must be grounded, but this connection is quite a time-consuming task.
The film must be peeled off so as not to damage the shielded part, the ground wire must be connected, and the wire must be insulated with insulation tape. However, by using an earth clamp, it is possible to fix the shielded part and cable (fixing it in the board), as well as to connect the grounding wire.
Although earth clamps are used in a wide range of applications, they are used to connect to the ground.
Earth clamps are used for grounding. Here is an explanation of why grounding is necessary.
In the first place, grounding is intended to protect humans from electricity. If unwanted electrical noise or leakage currents were to flow to humans, they would not be safe.
However, by connecting the ground to the earth, which is electrically stable, even if a leakage current occurs, the current will flow toward the earth and not to humans, thus ensuring a certain level of safety.
This is only a certain level of safety. Since the earth has lower resistance than humans, current flows more easily toward the earth. However, it can be said that it is only easy to flow, and a weak electric current flows to humans as well. If you touch a leaking electric motor with wet hands (whose resistance is extremely low), it will be a serious accident.
It can be said that an earth clamps are a tool to ensure a minimum level of safety.
Shielded wires are used to avoid electrical noise from other cables installed in the same location.
If electrical noise is received, the shield (e.g., copper tape) blocks the noise and allows the noise to escape to the earth through the ground connection. Grounding is necessary to prevent noise from entering the signal line inside the shield and leaking part of the signal to the outside.
