For many of us, COVID-19 has changed the way we work. COVID-19 has changed the way we communicate, congregate, and network. Large trade shows like Pittcon went virtual or shuttered entirely, but that wasn't necessarily the worst thing that happened. Less time traveling means more time working in the lab. However, if this situation continues for three years, it may be time to move away from the equipment and leave it to automation.
Derivatization allows GC to separate and analyze highly polar analytes such as sugars and free fatty acids. This technique is particularly important for applications such as metabolomics, but the vast chemical diversity of polarity and volatility makes it difficult to study. Unfortunately, these derivatized metabolites are susceptible to degradation, which is especially troublesome for batch derivatized samples, making the data less reliable and reproducible.
The solution to this problem lies in automating the process rather than manually derivatizing each sample just in time for injection. The L-PAL3 Derivatizer, announced at Pittcon 2023, does just that. Equipped with an automatic tool changer (ATX), a syringe wash station, and an agitator, the L-PAL3 can perform two-step derivatization of the entire sample tray with the highest precision through just-in-time derivatization.
Unlike other just-in-time derivatization equipment on the market, LECO's is already coupled with powerful ChromaTOF® brand software for seamless workflow integration. ChromaTOF's intuitive method design process has been extended to include overlap and scheduling of sample preparation, so no additional programming is required.
With this new tool, LECO's GC-TOFMS provides the sensitivity and targeted and non-targeted analysis in the full mass range needed for metabolomics workflows.
