■Description

The PB50 is a high voltage, high current amplifier designed to provide voltage and current gain to small signal general purpose operational amplifiers. Including the power booster in the driver amplifier's feedback loop creates a composite amplifier that combines the accuracy of the driver with the extended output voltage range and current capability of the booster. The PB50 can operate successfully without a driver in some applications, with just an external current-limiting resistor. Complementary MOSFETs are used in the output stage to eliminate the symmetry of the output impedance and the secondary breakdown limitations of bipolar connected transistors. A pin-strappable gain of 3 is available with internal feedback and a gain set resistor. Additionally, additional gain can be obtained with a single external resistor. Compensation is not required in most driver/gain configurations, but can be accomplished with a single external capacitor. Although this booster has a very simple construction, it is extremely flexible through the selection of driver amplifier, current limit, supply voltage, voltage gain, and compensation. This hybrid circuit uses a beryllium oxide (BeO) substrate, thick film resistors, ceramic capacitors, and semiconductor chips to achieve improved reliability, smaller size, and higher performance. Ultrasonically bonded aluminum wire provides reliable interconnects at all operating temperatures. The 8-pin TO-3 package is electrically isolated and hermetically sealed using one-shot resistance welding. The use of compressible insulating washers is not covered by the warranty.
