■Description

The PA194 is a precision power amplifier that can supply high voltage, high speed signals with very low noise. This product is ideal for applications where high speed analog accuracy is critical to system operation. It comes in an 8-pin power SIP package and supports up to 30W continuous power consumption.

■Mode pin operation

The PA194 has a built-in standby mode that reduces the quiescent current to 4mA when the mode terminal (pin number 9) is connected to the negative supply (-VS). Standby mode helps conserve power when the amplifier is not in normal operation.

■Input protection

The PA194 can withstand differential input voltages up to ±20V, but additional external protection is recommended. A 1N4148 or 1N914 signal diode is sufficient for most applications. This clamps the input differential voltage to ±0.7V. This is enough overdrive to produce maximum power bandwidth. Note that this protection feature does not automatically protect the amplifier from excessive common-mode input voltages.

■External parts

Compensation capacitor CC must be evaluated for full supply voltage. A 1kV NPO (COG) capacitor is recommended. Also, the rated voltage and voltage coefficient of the gain setting feedback resistor are equally important. Typical voltage ratings for low wattage resistors are 150-250V. Note that a voltage of up to 900V may be applied to the feedback resistor. When choosing external components such as feedback resistors and current-limiting resistors, use low-reactance type resistors. The inductance of wire-wound resistors can cause amplifier instability and reduced slew rate.
