■What is a current detection resistor?

A current sensing resistor is a common name for a resistor that is inserted in series with a current path and used to measure the current value from the voltage drop caused by Ohm's law. A high resistance value causes a large voltage drop and at the same time increases loss and heat generation, so a resistor with a low resistance value of 1Ω or less is generally used. Detecting and controlling the current in circuits is extremely important in improving the performance, safety, and energy saving of electronic devices. A current sensing resistor is a component used to convert current in a circuit to voltage with minimal power loss. There are various uses, but the three main types are shown below. ① Overcurrent detection: Current detection for taking measures such as stopping circuit operation when abnormally large current flows in a circuit due to a failure or overload. ② Current control: Inductor peak current detection to control the maximum output current of a DC/DC converter, current detection for phase and time control to drive a three-phase motor, etc. ③ Current management: Current management of secondary battery-powered devices such as smartphones and electric cars (detection of remaining battery power, etc.). Features of Panasonic Industry products

■Low resistance

Heat generation in a resistor depends on losses (I2R). Therefore, it is possible to reduce heat generation by lowering the resistance value. For example, by reducing a 10mΩ resistor to 2.5mΩ, it is possible to reduce heat generation by 33℃. Panasonic Industry has developed a current detection chip resistor with a lower resistance value than conventional resistors, and is proposing to use it to reduce the heat generated by the resistor.

■Improved temperature coefficient (TCR)

For highly accurate current measurement, if the temperature coefficient of the resistor is small, the resistance value will not fluctuate even if the temperature of the resistor changes, and high accuracy can be maintained. Therefore, for example, it can reduce errors in remaining battery power data for mobile devices, and through precise control and management, it is possible to extend the operating time of devices using batteries. However, the above-mentioned ``lower resistance'' and ``temperature coefficient'' have a contradictory relationship, and the problem was that lowering the resistance value worsened the temperature coefficient and worsened accuracy. Panasonic Industry has overcome this problem by improving the resistor and terminal electrode materials, and has commercialized current detection chip resistors with low resistance and low temperature coefficient.
