About This Product

Smartec humidity sensors are two-terminal capacitor types whose capacitance increases when water molecules are absorbed into the active polymer dielectric. The capacitor plate consists of a base plate and a water-permeable platinum top plate.

■Sensor operating principle

The humidity meter principle is quite complex. Humidity in the air is generally measured as a percentage of the maximum amount of moisture that the air can hold at that temperature. For air at a given temperature, this ratio varies between 0% (completely dry) and 100% (where condensation begins). Traditional humidity measurement methods, such as many mechanical humidity measuring devices and resistive sensors, are temperature dependent, and wet and dry bulbs are pressure dependent. The Smartec Humidity Sensor RH allows relative humidity (RH) measurement independent of temperature and pressure. In order to protect the sensitive part of the sensor, special packaging became available in the first quarter of 2010. Smartec's capacitive humidity sensor is basically a silicon semiconductor on a glass substrate, and by utilizing its manufacturing technology, it can be mass-produced at low cost. Smartec's humidity sensor has a three-layer structure. The base and top layers are conductive with a polyimide between them that detects humidity. Because the sensing part has this structure, there is almost no temperature dependence. The top layer has a grid-like structure, and a sensor inside converts humidity into capacitance. Due to its structure, it is extremely responsive to changes in humidity (<15 sec) and its hysteris is very small (<2% RH).

■Product features

-Smartec capacitive humidity sensor measures relative humidity from 0% to 100%. In many use cases, condensation forms on the sensor during use. This does not impair the sensor's performance, but it does increase the response time by the time the condensate dries. - Linearity is within 2% range from 20% to 95% (RH). - Fast response time (< 15 s), suitable for applications that require quick response.
