■Summary

Acousto-optics devices use acoustic waves to create a diffraction grating within an optical medium. As the power of the RF signal changes, the total amount of light diffracted changes proportionally. The AO modulator can control and modulate the intensity of light by repeating ON/OFF at a set frequency and at a speed exceeding that of a mechanical shutter (up to 70MHz). It can also be used like a variable attenuator (dynamically controlling the intensity of transmitted light). G&H's AO modulators are optimized for low scatter and high damage thresholds.

■About AOM selection

The most important factor in selecting an AO modulator is the required speed. This influences the selection of materials, AOM design, and the RF driver used. The speed of an AO modulator is described as its rise time, which determines how quickly the AO modulator responds to the RF driver, and thus the modulation rate. Rise time is proportional to the time required for the acoustic wave to traverse the beam, and for this reason also affects the beam diameter inside the AOM. AO modulators can be divided into two categories in terms of speed. High-speed modulators are capable of modulation frequencies up to 70MHz and rise times as short as 4ns. To reach this speed, the input beam must be narrowed very small to the AO modulator. Lower frequency modulators do not have this limitation and can accommodate larger beam inputs. Rise time is usually specified as ns/mm relative to the beam diameter. In addition to speed, to correctly select the optimal AO modulator and RF driver, consider the following requirements for each product application: ・Operating wavelength ・Laser output (power resistance performance) ・Modulation type (analog or digital) ・Beam diameter ・Required contrast ratio ・Explanation Swing angle of angle (Example: 5 to 10 mrad) ・Laser polarization state
