■Product overview
FSS series force sensors provide highly accurate and reliable force sensing performance at a low price in a compact commercial package. This sensor features proven sensing technology using a special piezoresistive microfabricated silicon sensing element. A low power, unamplified, uncorrected Wheatstone bridge circuit design provides an inherently stable mV output over its force range.
Force sensors operate on the principle that the resistance of a silicon-implanted piezoresistor increases as the resistor contracts under an applied force. The sensors of this series concentrate the force from the measuring medium directly onto the silicon sensing element via a stainless steel ball. The amount of resistance changes proportionally to the amount of force applied. As the circuit resistance changes, the corresponding mV output level changes.
The sensor package design incorporates a patented modular construction. The use of innovative elastomeric technology and molded plastic design provides an overforce capacity of up to three times the rated force (maximum). The stainless steel balls provide excellent mechanical stability and can be used in a variety of applications.
FSS Series sensors are capable of 20 million operations with a mean cycle between failure (MCTF) reliability test (50°C [122°F]). This test determines the number of full-scale operations a sensor can perform before failure.
