■Product overview
Honeywell's FSS-SMT series force sensors are the most reliable force sensors available today with a proven mean cycles between failure (MCTF) rating of 20 million cycles at 25°C [77°F]. This is one of the sensors. This low-profile surface mount technology (SMT) sensor allows automatic assembly onto printed circuit boards, helping reduce assembly costs.
The FSS-SMT series force sensor design provides high accuracy and reliable force sensing performance in a compact commercial package. This sensor features Honeywell sensing technology that uses a special piezoresistive microfabricated silicon sensing element. A low power, unamplified, uncorrected Wheatstone bridge circuit design provides an inherently stable mV output over its force range.
Force sensors operate on the principle that the resistance of a silicon-implanted piezoresistor changes as the resistor contracts under an applied force. This series of sensors focuses the force from the object to be measured directly onto the silicon sensing element via a stainless steel ball. The amount of resistance changes proportionally to the amount of force applied. As the circuit resistance changes, the corresponding mV output level changes.
The sensor package design incorporates a patented modular construction. The use of innovative elastomeric technology and molded plastic design allows for load excitation up to N (depending on range). The stainless steel balls provide excellent mechanical stability and are applicable to a variety of medical and commercial applications.
