The tin plating of the lead terminals may generate whisker-like crystals called whiskers, which are several micrometers in thickness and several millimeters in length. Whiskers grow larger over time and can short out electronic circuits and wiring, causing electronic equipment to malfunction.
A common method to prevent whiskers is to apply an alkaline cleaning treatment, but although this method has some effect in suppressing whiskers, it cannot completely suppress them. Kohoku Kogyo has established a unique method of applying UV resin coating to the welded parts of lead terminals, and has achieved zero whisker generation.
