■Features

CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) is a lightweight, strong composite material that combines carbon fiber and plastic. Because this combination has excellent properties, it is used in a wide range of fields such as aerospace, automobiles, sports equipment, and architecture. Due to its high strength, high rigidity, and light weight, it can also be considered as an alternative material to metal materials. It is also an anisotropic material, meaning that its physical properties vary depending on the orientation of the material. The strength in the fiber direction is high, but the strength in the cross direction is not high. CFRP is also conductive due to its carbon fiber properties, and is also used in electronic devices, sensors, and parts of artificial satellites.

■Precautions when using and processing

If used outdoors for a long time, surface treatment is required to prevent deterioration. It is a relatively expensive material. CFRP is a material with many advantages, but it is also a difficult material to cut. Because it is very strong and the fiber layer easily peels off, processing must be done carefully and takes time. In addition, minute carbon particles cause wear on cutting tools. Basically, carbide and diamond-coated tools are used for machining. Dust from processing has an impact on the human body and can cause itching if it comes into contact with the skin. If you inhale this, it can damage your lungs. If you rub your hands with it on your hands, you may get injured, so safety is essential.

■CFRP cutting technology

・Selection of appropriate cutting tools CFRP is a very hard material, so machining it with regular cutting tools will lead to premature wear. Machining with worn tools will lead to deterioration of accuracy, so it is necessary to select tools made of a harder material than CFRP (carbide, diamond). ・Optimization of cutting speed The cutting speed of CFRP should be optimized according to the fiber direction. Generally, cutting is performed at low speed in the fiber direction and high speed in the perpendicular direction. This improves the quality of the surface finish and extends tool life.
