The selective part of an ultrafiltration membrane is a shiny surface layer called the membrane's "skin." The lower layer of the skin has a "finger pore" structure that supports the skin and facilitates fluid flow.
■High selectivity
Ultrafiltration membranes utilize a nominal molecular weight cutoff as a measure of pore size distribution across the membrane surface. The more uniform the pore size, the more selective the membrane. A narrower pore size distribution indicates a higher selectivity of the membrane.
This means that the membrane has high performance in distinguishing between macromolecules of similar size.
■High flux
Under standard conditions, Repligen flow rates are the highest at any TMP. This increases processing efficiency, reduces processing time, and saves costs.
Repligen manufactures two types of membrane chemistries that can be used in ProStream and HyStream (flat sheet cassettes) for both ultrafiltration and microfiltration pore sizes. Both are modified polyethersulfone (mPES) membranes that have been validated for use in cGMP processes.
The precast membrane solution is modified by adding a second polymer to ensure comprehensive and consistent surface modification.
ProStream membranes are electrically neutral, resulting in lower binding forces and improved flux and recovery. This membrane has excellent chemical resistance and very low leachables, with performance comparable to Millipore Biomax and Pall Omega.
