■Compact and high frequency compatible transformer realized

We have received many opinions and requests from customers, such as ``I want to downsize the power supply'' and ``I want to improve the performance of the power supply.'' Two years ago, our company developed a transformer that can be installed in power supply circuits that can be made smaller and have higher performance by switching in the 400KHz range even with high-frequency power supplies. We have continued to do so. Although there were many difficulties in development, the planar type transformer was completed in September of this year, and production and sales are now possible.

■Characteristics of planar transformer

In order to downsize the power supply, there is a way to use a high frequency of 400KHz to 500KHz. Naturally, peripheral components must also be compatible with high frequencies, but at this frequency, a transformer with a low inductance of several hundred μH is required, and the number of turns can be reduced. Moreover, a small choke coil can be used for the smoothing circuit of the power supply. However, in order to use it in a conventional high-frequency transformer, it is necessary to improve leakage inductance, distributed capacitance, and coupling between coils, which requires a certain amount of ingenuity and know-how in transformer manufacturing. Therefore, it becomes expensive due to additional man-hours and additional materials. At our company, by using substrate type coils and thin rectangular wire coils, we have been able to improve the manufacturing problems and are now able to manufacture transformers that support stable operation at frequencies of 400KHz and above. Ta. Furthermore, by changing the coil combinations and connections, we have made it possible to diversify input and output.

■Precautions for use

- It is necessary to consider the cooling of the transformer core. (air cooling) ・It is necessary to consider the driving method, circuit implementation, and layout compatible with high frequencies when determining the circuit system and driving frequency. - Care must be taken to keep the circuit impedance as low as possible. (Examination of wiring pattern and component layout) -It is necessary to use high frequency compatible (parts) capacitors and semiconductors. ・The operating frequency must be switched in the frequency band of 400KHz to 500KHz.
