The Witt standard was established for the first time in history as a standard screw standard during the Industrial Revolution in England, and has since spread to countries around the world. It was once adopted in Japan's JIS standards, but was abolished in March 1968. However, it is still used in fields such as construction and water supply and drainage, and in some older machinery. In many cases, a “W” is added before the size to distinguish it from unified screws, which are also inch screws. The difference is the thread angle: the wit thread has a thread angle of 55°, while the unified thread has a thread angle of 60°. Both wit screws and unified screws are called "inch screws," but they are not interchangeable. Hexagon sockets are of the same standard as metric threads.
