A bolt with a hexagonal column head. By tightening from the outside of the head with a tool such as a spanner or box wrench, it can be tightened more strongly than cross-recessed machine screws, and can be installed even in narrow spaces. Available in a wide variety of materials, surface treatments, standards, and sizes, they are used in a wide range of fields including automobiles, machinery, architecture, bridges, medical equipment, and vacuum equipment. Some have a fall prevention function and a negative recess. The length under the neck is called the thread's "nominal length (L)," and the outer diameter of the thread is called the "nominal diameter (d1)" or "thread nominal." These are usually considered the "diameter and length" when purchasing screws. Please note that for hexagonal bolts, this length does not include the head. The dimension (S) called the ``width across flats'' or ``opposite sides'' of the head is a number that indicates the size of the tool used to tighten the hex bolt. When the neck length becomes longer, there are two types: fully threaded (threaded from the tip to the neck, also called a push bolt) and half-threaded (threaded halfway from the tip to the neck). . Please note that the boundary between half-thread and full-thread may differ depending on the bolt manufacturer.
