It got its name because it looks like a plate when viewed from the side. Sometimes written as “FLAT HEAD” or “countersunk head”. Because the head is flat, it can be embedded to the same height as the mating material, and is used in areas where you want to eliminate protrusions, such as sashes and doors. In addition to the cross recess, there are also options such as a slotted hole and a tamper-proof function, depending on the application. The back of the head is slanted, so counterboring is required when using it. (The countersunk part is tapered at 90° for general metric threads, but it is tapered at about 80° for unified (UNC / UNF) screws.) The Unify standard is used in foreign-made electrical appliances, cars, motorcycles, furniture, etc. Unlike other machine screws, the length is the "total length" including the head.
