They are the most commonly used machine screws because they come in a variety of materials and surface treatments and can be used for a variety of purposes. The name is based on the shape of the head, and is also called a pan screw or pan (PAN) head. Tighten by screwing into the female thread cut into the nut or mating material. The head will be exposed after tightening, but it can also fasten thin plate-like objects that cannot be counterbored. There are products available depending on the purpose and use, such as those with washers, flathead screw heads, drop-off prevention functions, left-handed screws, tamper-proof functions, and seals. To avoid exposing the head, use laminate machine screws (ultra low profile type) or countersunk machine screws (counterbore required).
