Triethanolamine is an organic compound belonging to the aliphatic amine family.
It is also known as trihydroxytriethylamine. It has an ammoniacal odor and is a clear, colorless, viscous liquid at room temperature. At lower temperatures, a white crystalline solid precipitates.

Triethanolamine is synthesized from ethylene oxide and an aqueous solution of ammonia. Although monoethanolamine and diethanolamine are produced at the same time during the synthesis reaction, the ratio of the resulting products can be controlled by adjusting the amounts of the reaction materials.
Triethanolamine is used as a base catalyst in organic synthesis reactions. It is also used in synthetic detergents as an auxiliary agent for surfactants.
