HDD stands for Hard Disk Drive and is a typical external storage device. Generally, HDDs consist of multiple metal disks with magnetic materials stacked on top of each other, which are rotated at high speed to read and write data by magnetizing the magnetic material when the magnetic head is brought in close proximity to it.
The structure is vulnerable to vibration because the magnetic head and disk are brought into proximity to read and write data. SCSI, IDE, SATA, and other standards are used for the connection.
HDDs are used as external storage devices and often store data on PCs. In addition to PCs, hard disks are widely used in electronic devices such as external storage devices, servers, network drives, hard disk recorders in home appliances, and game consoles.
While HDDs use magnetic disks, SSDs record data in NAND flash memory, which uses semiconductor elements.
A hard disk generally consists of a disk, motor, magnetic head, and control circuit.
A single disk is called a platter, and multiple platters are mounted on it in a hard disk. Hard disks record data on these platters. Magnetic material is applied to the surface of the platters for recording.
Hard disks contain motors that are used for two purposes: one is to rotate the platters, and the other is to move the magnetic head. The other is the motor that drives the arm that moves the magnetic head.
The magnetic head is used to read and write data on the platters of a hard disk. Since there are multiple platters, the magnetic head is mounted on as many platters as there are. The principle of writing data is based on the relationship between magnetism and electricity, and information is written by applying a magnetic force to the magnetic material on the platter surface. The data is read based on the resistance value that changes under the influence of the magnetic field on the platters.
