A screw plier is a specialized tool designed for removing screws that are difficult to extract with a regular screwdriver. Developed from the basic design of pliers, screw pliers employ the principle of leverage to grip and turn objects with minimal effort. They are particularly useful for screws that are deformed, have damaged threads, are rusted, or have specialized head shapes that make them challenging to remove with conventional screwdrivers. By directly gripping the screw head, these pliers can effectively extract such problematic screws.
Various models of screw pliers are available in the market, featuring different sizes and tip shapes to accommodate various screw heads. An example of a well-known screw plier brand is Neji-Saurus.
Originally designed for turning bolts and nuts, screw pliers have evolved to include the function of removing difficult-to-extract screws. Their specially crafted tips allow for secure holding of even small screws. These pliers are ideal for removing screws with conditions like rust, damaged threads, or unique thread designs. The vertical groove on the tip of some models enables them to grip and turn screws in tight spaces where horizontal maneuvering is not possible.
Screw pliers leverage the principle of leverage, allowing for the secure gripping and turning of objects with minimal force. Their jaws are specially shaped and grooved to firmly hold small screws, preventing slippage during the turning process. Neji-Saurus, for instance, offers a range of pliers with varying tip shapes, groove depths, and sizes to suit different screw types.
When there is enough space to maneuver, the screw head is clamped between the jaws of the pliers and the tool is turned to generate greater torque with the same force, thanks to the increased distance from the fulcrum to the point of force application. However, screw pliers cannot be used for completely embedded screws, such as countersunk screws, as they require the ability to grip the head of the screw. For such cases, a different type of screw remover, like a bazooka, which has a distinct design from pliers, is used.
