A vertical boring mill, also known as a vertical lathe, is a type of machining equipment that operates differently from traditional large lathes. In this machine, the workpiece is fixed in a horizontal position.
While standard large lathes typically mount circular or cylindrical workpieces vertically, this positioning becomes problematic for pieces with diameters exceeding approximately 400-500 mm. The gravitational force can make secure fixing challenging and may lead to uneven rotation, affecting the machining quality. In contrast, the vertical boring mill's horizontal workpiece placement allows gravity to act perpendicular to the rotation. This orientation enables secure and stable fixation of large workpieces, ensuring more precise machining.
Although the vertical boring mill allows for processing larger workpieces via its movable table, it is not well-suited for machining lengthy workpieces due to its fixed mechanism. Additionally, one of its limitations is that metal chips do not naturally fall away from the workpiece, potentially leading to accumulation and maintenance challenges.
