■Nano-sized zeolite “Zeoal” which is a miniaturized version of zeolite

Zeolites are crystalline compounds whose main components are silica (silicon dioxide) and alumina (aluminum oxide). Although it cannot be seen with the naked eye, when magnified, it has a porous structure with countless holes like a sponge, and 1 gram has a surface area that is more than the size of one tennis court. It is a crystalline compound with functions such as. By making zeolite particles smaller and nano-sized, the basic performance will be dramatically improved and new applications can be expected. However, conventional manufacturing methods have resulted in high manufacturing costs, and concrete market evaluation has not progressed. Therefore, we began joint development with the Wakihara Laboratory, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, and the Nakahira Laboratory, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Prefecture University, and achieved nano-size production at "low cost" through an innovative process. While retaining the original adsorption and other functions of zeolite, its functionality is further improved by making it nano-sized, allowing for new applications such as optical applications that require light transparency and addition to fine fibers. Since 2016, we have been working on the development task of the industry-academia joint practical application development project (A-STEP NexTEP-A), which was commissioned by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (hereinafter referred to as JST). Based on the research results of Associate Professor Toru Wakihara of the Department of Chemical Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, JST entrusted us with commercial development from August 2016 to March 2019. In this development, zeolite nanoparticles are produced using two methods: the "pulverization/recrystallization method" to produce small-diameter zeolite nanoparticles of 100 nm or less, and the "grain growth method" to produce large-diameter zeolite nanoparticles of 150 to 300 nm. We have successfully achieved stable synthesis. This makes it possible to produce zeolite nanoparticles at approximately 1/10 the cost compared to conventional methods.
