■Transferring damping devices from high-rise buildings to wooden housesVibration Control Tape® is a viscoelastic material used in vibration control devices for high-rise buildings that has been processed into a double-sided tape for use in wooden houses.

■Mechanism of vibration control tape®During a major earthquake, the columns and beams deform into parallelograms, but the panels resist while remaining rectangular, causing misalignment between them and causing the nails to bend or break. As a result, the entire house becomes loose, and the displacement increases with each earthquake. By sandwiching a 1mm thick damping tape® between these misaligned areas, the vibration energy is converted into thermal energy and the shaking is reduced.

■ Strong against repeated earthquakesAs shown in the graph below, a house with seismic control tape® maintains approximately the same displacement even after repeated large earthquakes.

■Natural period and resonance ~ Damage ~ CollapseNewly built houses have a short natural period of 0.1 to 0.2 seconds, which makes them relatively unaffected by earthquakes, but if the building becomes loose due to thinning trees or repeated earthquakes, the natural period shifts to 0.3 to 0.5 seconds, causing earthquake waves. It will resonate and cause major damage. This is one of the reasons why aftershocks cause damage and collapse.

■Whole housing damperIn full-scale vibration experiments conducted many times during the Southern Hyogo Prefecture Earthquake, we have confirmed that the use of Seismic Control Tape® can reduce the shaking (interstory displacement) of a house by up to 80%. This is possible because the damping tape® is placed in a well-balanced manner throughout the house, making the entire house a damper.

■Viscoelastic material developed for high-rise buildingsViscoelastic materials developed for use in high-rise buildings have excellent durability and energy absorption. Seismic damping devices for buildings, which consist of a viscoelastic material sandwiched between two steel plates, were too strong and unsuitable for general housing, but we focused on this material and processed the viscoelastic material into a double-sided tape to attach it to columns and beams. We have developed a seismic damping system for residential buildings that minimizes damage during large earthquakes by sandwiching it between walls and surface materials.
