The walking watch that measures step length is the latest walking watch developed based on the research results of the Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Geriatric Center Research Institute. Based on research results showing that short strides increase the risk of dementia, we believe that it is important to develop the habit of walking with a wide stride in daily life.
With Dr. Masaru Taniguchi (*) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Health Geriatrics Center Research Institute as an advisor, we have developed a walking watch that measures stride length as a product to support walking. (Currently employed at the Environmental Risk and Health Research Center, National Institute for Environmental Studies)
■Watches developed based on the latest research results
At the Tokyo Metropolitan Health Geriatrics Center Research Institute, we investigated the lifestyle and physical functions of 1,149 people aged 70 and older, and tracked 666 people for about three years, excluding those who needed nursing care or who were suspected of having dementia. I investigated. As a result, in addition to being older, it was found that low red blood cell counts, low HDL cholesterol levels, and low albumin levels in the blood were associated with cognitive decline.
Furthermore, in addition to these factors, narrow stride length was also found to be strongly associated with future cognitive decline. When men and women were divided into three groups, ``wide,'' ``normal,'' and ``narrow,'' the stride length of men and women when walking normally was found. 3.4 times higher risk of developing functional decline.
For women, the risk was 5.8 times higher. Thus, we set out to utilize the results of this research to develop a product that can prevent the risk of developing dementia in daily life.
■Pursuing operability and visibility through trial and error
The entire company, led by our representative director, worked together to come up with product ideas. Among these, operability and convenience were considered important.
Due to the characteristics of the product, we have designed it to be simple to operate, with the functions reduced to the minimum necessary so that even seniors can use it without hesitation. We also decided that the product should be compact and convenient so that it can be carried around at all times so that it is not used once and then is over. We have focused on two types of product development: walking watches and pedometers.
