About This Product

Planetary ball mills meet all requirements for fast and reproducible analytical milling. Used for the most demanding tasks in the laboratory, from routine sample processing to colloid milling to advanced materials development.

■Functional principle

In a planetary ball mill, each jar represents a "planet". The planet is located on a circular platform, the so-called sunwheel. When the sunwheel rotates, the jar rotates around its axis, but in the opposite direction. At this time, centrifugal force and Coriolis force act, and the grinding balls are rapidly accelerated. As a result, the grinding energy required to produce very fine particles is very high. The grinding balls are greatly accelerated from one wall of the jar to the other, creating a strong impact on the sample and further reducing particle size through friction. For colloid milling and most other applications, the ratio of solar wheel rotation speed to grinding jar rotation speed is 1:-2. This means that for every revolution of the solar wheel, the grinding jar makes two revolutions in the opposite direction. This speed ratio is that of a typical planetary ball mill. Planetary ball mills with high energy input and speed ratios of 1:-2.5 or 1:-3 are primarily used for mechanochemical applications.

■Application field

Planetary ball mills dry and wet grind soft, hard, brittle, and fibrous materials. Since the centrifugal force is very large, the crushing energy is large and the processing time is short. Planetary ball mills are ideal for research such as mechanochemistry (mechanosynthesis, mechanoalloying, mechanocatalysis), ultrafine colloid milling on the nanometer scale, and everyday tasks such as mixing and homogenizing. Another field of application is the screening of co-crystals, such as in the pharmaceutical industry. An important advantage of planetary ball mills is their versatility. Planetary ball mills have various grinding stations. The sizes and materials of jars and balls vary.
