The tapered mechanical design allows the subject to be illuminated at a 45° incidence to the optical axis of the lens when using external lighting. In the case of Reflx™, which transmits images through two reflections, the optical surface of the mirror must be made more precisely in order to achieve a transmitted wavefront accuracy of λ/4 (P-V) with two reflections. The mirror was polished and tested using a Q22-MRF machine manufactured by QED (USA), a precision manufacturing facility owned by Edmund Optics, and an SSI sub-aperture stitching interferometer to achieve a resolution of λ/20 (P-V) or better. Finished with board surface accuracy of . The objective lens uses an infinity design for use with an f=200mm imaging lens. For broadband imaging applications, we recommend using the Mitutoyo MT-L imaging lens (#56-073). The infinity design allows components such as filters and beam splitters to be placed in the optical path, making this objective also ideal for biotech and fluorescence applications. For single-point focusing applications, the input beam should fill the objective's prescribed entrance pupil diameter. In both cases, some of the light propagation is blocked by the structure, creating an intensity distribution with less energy in the center of the beam. Many applications using reflective objectives require the lenses to be placed at angles of incidence up to 45°. To accommodate these steep angle installations, the high-performance Reflx™ features a tapered design that provides over 6mm of object-to-surface clearance. Additionally, to eliminate the diffraction effects at the image plane caused by straight-leg spider mounts, the high-performance Reflx™ uses curved-leg spider mounts. Stray light prevention measures are also taken on all surfaces on the internal lens barrel side.
