About This Product

Fuel cells were invented more than a century ago and have been used in every NASA mission since the 1960s, but their high cost still prevents them from being widely adopted. Previous fuel cell technologies such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMs), phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs), and molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) all rely on expensive precious metals, corrosive acids, or containment. I needed a material that was hard to make. In terms of cost performance, it was only slightly better than alternatives, so the overall market situation did not change significantly until now. Manufacturers of traditional fuel cell technology have attempted to overcome these limitations by offering combined heat and power (CHP) schemes that utilize waste heat. The introduction of CHP has alleviated the cost problem to some extent, but it only works if the ratio of heat to power needs is exactly matched on a 24/7 basis. Otherwise, the downsides of CHP, such as cost, complexity, and customization, outweigh the benefits. For decades now, experts have agreed that solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have the greatest potential among fuel cell technologies. This is because SOFC exhibits excellent cost performance without relying on CHP due to low-cost ceramic materials and extremely high power generation efficiency. However, to date, commercialization of this promising new technology has faced significant technical challenges. SOFCs typically operate at temperatures above 800°C, and while this heat provides extremely high power generation efficiency and fuel flexibility, it also poses technical challenges. Bloom Energy has solved these technical challenges. Through breakthrough advances in materials science and innovative new designs, Bloom Energy has enabled SOFC technology with an economical, flameless, all-electric solution. Fuel cells, which have been in production for more than a century, are now finally available as a distributed power source with the benefits of cleanliness and stability, and above all, cost competitiveness.
