About This Product

Biofade is a thermoforming material that is a composite of biomass powder and biodegradable plastic. Biofade is a newly developed biomass composite material that biodegrades in seawater without leaving behind any microplastics. *Biodegradation becomes more difficult in the order of composting (soil, freshwater, and seawater) due to differences in the amount of bacteria in the environment. Developing molding materials that biodegrade in seawater is said to be the most difficult task. Features

■Average biodegradability after 28 days in seawater is 36% [Biodegradability test conducted by Chemical Evaluation Research Institute (CERI)]

Even in the unlikely event that a product made from Biofade leaks into the ocean, it will not remain in nature as a microplastic for a long time like regular plastics, but will biodegrade into carbon dioxide and water.

■The higher the biomass content, the lower the total CO2 emissions when ultimately disposed of by landfill or incineration.

(carbon neutral) Since the main component of the composite biodegradable plastic is derived from plants, it is possible to increase the biomass content of molded products.

■Can be thermoformed like regular plastics

We aim to improve the moldability problems found in many biodegradable polymers and improve their practical performance.

■There are various types of “biodegradable plastics”

The amount of bacteria will vary depending on the environment in which the biodegradable plastic is placed. For example, biodegradation is relatively easy in environments where large numbers of bacteria live, such as food waste and soil, but seawater has very few bacteria, making it a very difficult environment for biodegradation. In other words, plastics that biodegrade in seawater can be said to be almighty biodegradable in any other environment. In order to solve the plastic waste problem, including the "marine plastic waste problem," we aimed to create a plastic material that easily biodegrades even in seawater. The result is ``Biofade.'' This was created through joint research with the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Center.
