About This Product
■What is basalt fiber?
Basalt is basalt (a type of mafic volcanic rock, corresponding to the plutonic rock gabbro). Basalt fiber is made by melting basalt at high temperatures and turning it into a fiber.
A lot of basalt is mined in the mountainous regions of China and Russia, and a lot of basalt made in China is imported to Japan. This basalt fiber is attracting attention as a fiber that surpasses glass fiber.
■Characteristics of basalt fiber
The best feature of basalt fiber is its cold resistance and weather resistance. The heat resistance is 700℃ and the cold resistance is -260℃, which is not as good as glass fiber. Many companies are conducting research to put this technology into practical use as it has high potential, but it has not yet penetrated the market.
However, it has been commercialized into products such as fireproof clothing and fireproof gloves. Looking at the manufacturer's specifications, it appears to be made from a blend of chemical fiber, glass fiber, and basalt fiber.
