About This Product

Increasing the clock frequency of digital circuits is directly linked to improving processing power, so it is inevitable that they will become faster. In order to prevent malfunctions on printed circuit boards that have increased in speed in this way, it is becoming essential to use a transmission line simulator to analyze the waveform of the signal traveling through the transmission line, and to reflect the results in board design. In other words, it is difficult to create a fully functional board by remaking the board or by cutting and trying based on jumpers, which was possible with conventional low-speed digital circuits. Debugging work using a board that does not work as expected and having to repeatedly remake the printed circuit board during the prototyping stage not only delays and confuses the development schedule, but also has a significant impact on the time to market the final product. This could result in a significant loss of business (profits and market share) that the product could have earned in the market. In light of this current situation, we have developed an in-house transmission line simulator and have been using it in our daily board design work.

■Why transmission line analysis is necessary

In a 500MHz operating circuit with an allowed phase of 10 degrees, the allowable wiring length error (theoretical value) for the printed circuit board pattern is only about 1 cm. Furthermore, in an actual board, there are multiple through holes, bends in the pattern, and unnecessary routing to match the wiring length, so this number becomes even smaller. On the other hand, blindly adjusting the length to the same length out of fear of malfunction will not only prolong the development schedule and increase development costs, but will also have a negative impact on the surrounding circuits. To avoid these contradictory problems, it is necessary to use a transmission line simulator to confirm reliable operation at the printed circuit board design stage and reflect this in the board design. Additionally, for board design companies, the ability to operate a transmission line simulator is undoubtedly a prerequisite for set manufacturers to select a subcontractor for printed circuit board design.

■Effects of transmission line simulation

If the printed circuit board is remade, the development schedule will be delayed and the costs will increase as a result, which is a loss in itself. In addition, the opportunity loss (loss of sales and market share that could have been gained) due to a delay in bringing the final product to market is immeasurable.
