About This Product

UD Tape (Unidirectional Tape) is a thermoplastic tape made of glass or carbon reinforced fibers embedded parallel to a thermoplastic matrix. UD tape's thermosetting solutions feature shorter production times and lower weights when compared to other methods of manufacturing fiber-reinforced plastic components.

■Product featuresIn terms of mechanical strength, fiber incorporation is once again required in parts. However, the injection molding process imposes limits on fiber length and therefore mechanical strength. Therefore, special treatment is required for areas where stress is concentrated, such as cutouts and open areas.

Increasing fiber content or thickness, or adding metal inserts where needed are options to improve strength, but at the cost of increased weight and cost. UD tapes/pads and sheets with unidirectional fiber embedding can easily be matched to part morphology* without adding weight or cost.

*Morphology: In the plastics industry, it is mainly used to mean "the way each component mixes when two or more types of polymers (or additives) are mixed." In addition, in the case of crystalline polymers, the word is used to describe the size of the crystal and the way it is stretched.
