About This Product

By tapering an optical fiber, the state of light entering and exiting from the tip behaves differently than usual. It is also expected to be applied to sensing and functional devices.

■Tapering technology

Tapered optical fibers and tapered capillaries are manufactured by heating and stretching optical fibers and glass capillaries. Taper shape and tip diameter can be changed depending on heating conditions and stretching conditions. When optical fibers are tapered, the core as well as the outer diameter can be tapered, allowing various optical properties to be imparted. The tip of an optical fiber (quartz-based) with a diameter of 2 mm or less can be tapered, and the tip diameter can be reduced to 1 μm or less. It is also possible to control the shape of the taper, such as whether it is pointed, rounded, uneven, or eccentric. Furthermore, by applying this process, the state of light entering and exiting from the tip exhibits behavior that is different from normal, and this is expected to be used for applications in sensing and functional devices.
