About This Product

■What is a ball lens?

A spherical lens made from a material such as glass that can make light parallel (collimated) or focus it on a single point. Ball lenses are characterized by a shorter focal length than ordinary convex lenses (single lenses), and by making the outer diameter smaller and using high refractive index materials, it is possible to achieve even shorter focal lengths. In addition, hemispherical lenses, which have a part of the sphere made into a flat surface, are suitable for applications that require a more compact optical system.

■Sphericity

This is an indicator of how close the shape of a sphere is to a perfect sphere. Measure the shape of the sphere's surface at various angles and find the maximum distance from the minimum circumscribed circle to the sphere's surface in each cross section. The smaller this maximum distance, the higher the sphericity.

■Variation in diameter

It refers to the difference between the maximum and minimum diameter of a sphere. The maximum and minimum diameters are the distances between two parallel planes tangent to the surface of the sphere. A smaller diameter discrepancy means that the sphere is more well-shaped and uniform in size.

■Intra-lot mutual error

This refers to the difference between the largest and smallest average diameter among a certain number of balls manufactured under the same conditions. In other words, it is an indicator of the variation in ball size. The smaller the difference, the more evenly sized the balls are made.
